an amazing productive saturday

This is a glimpse of the Balinese children story lived in rural underdeveloped village, who never see outside world, and never taste the tourism impact. This story sent to me by Lia Johan, Human Resources consultant, living in Denpasar Bali , who one day has visiting my project and see the children with her colleagues.

Amazing Productive Saturday

(Lia Johan, on National Education Day : 2009, 2nd of May).

Thanks to Tati, Lorraine (new friend from Melbourne-Australia, Pande, Jro, Gde, ibu Ni Wyn Kartini, bpk Mantri, bpk head of village of Songan, bpk I. Kt. Sidin, S.Pd, bpk I. Md. Sujendra teachers of SDN Blandingan, kec. Kintamani, kab. Bangli, last but not least my new friend from Jakarta, Susi.

In this clear weather Saturday, we went to Songan village in Kintamani, visiting the project of ANAK ALAM as introduced by PANDE PUTU SETIAWAN, the founder.

On the way there, we saw the amazing beautiful scenery of Mount and Lake Batur. The mystical hidden valley, ... wow. Thank GOD!.

First we went to the residence house of Anak Alam (that unfortunately owned by the parents of Pande). We meet ibu Kartini and bapak Nyoman Sadia so called pak Mantri (he is the awarded the most dedicated nurse in Bali 1983 and now he has retired). Then we walked through shallot plants to visit the Lake. They told us that 3 years ago, they could see the sand on the lake side, but not longer like that. Lots of garbage, especially plastic and pesticide container used in the plantation.

Then we had to ride motorbike on the steep 1 car fit zig zag road (imagine the returning way down, huh......). It took 15 minutes to go up the we arrived at Blandingan village on the top of the hill. 1st we visit the Kantor Kepala Desa (head of the village office), then the Blandingan elementary school, and finally the wantilan (hall).

We take time a bit to take a deep breath, preparing our donation that is used clothes, books, sandals, etc. on plastic bags before we get in. In the school office, we met the teachers. Pande started to indrocing us to the teachers, followed by watching their VCD (photo documentary involving the Blandingan school students, taken since 2 years ago... surprise..), then another inspiring documentary ANAK RIMBA from his fellow Butet Manurung teaching in the Suku Anak Dalam, Sumatera.

At the end, we had a discussion with the leaders there, re: what this organization will do for the school in the future.

The nearest project will be the visit from 24 elementary student of Dyatmika School in Denpasar on May 14th. Pande plan to show the VCD to the students (wondering how their expressions will be....).

Then the most interesting discussion was then lively and naturally held:

1. Their major problem is about WATER.
2. Re: the students, there is still a challenge, since the parents put aside education as 2nd priority after the demand to help them working in the garden (tomato, chilli, cabbage, shallot and many more).
3. Re: KF program (Keaksaraan Fungsional/ functional literary), they require govt. Support (in funding) especially for students' incentive (to motivate them to attend the class, 3 times per week 2 hours each. Besides, most of them are adults with their own duties and responsibilities, mainly economic/financial.

The good news is that there will be the 1st batch of about 40 student of KEJAR B package (equal to SMP/Jr. High School) completed the program, and will take the exam in June, to continue to KEJAR C package (equal to SMA/ Sr. High School).

According to pak Ketut Sidin, the coordinator and teacher himself, the program funding stopped after 6 months. The government only paid for the tutor's books and transport. But they never paid for the incentive money promised for the participants.

The cost need to be paid is only IDR 25,000 per month per person. But due to bad economic condition, they need support.

Another interesting and also the best part and inspiring, is the story of bapak Made Sujendra (Sujin). In 1953-1954 he studied in SR (Sekolah Rakyat/ Public School) in Bangli. He quit from grade 4th, while his classmate at that time becoming the head of LPM (Lembaga Pengembangan Masyarakat/ Society Development Institution) UNUD: prof. Tegeh Suryadi.

It started when he was involved in building the school in Pinggan, then he initiatively brought his idea to build a school in Blandingan, proppsed to UPTD (Unit Penghubung Tingkat Dasar), then Camat/ head of village, ministry of Education Bangli region.

He then be involved in building the school we visited today. He is the Education hero from Blandingan. Additional to that, he involved in making the road development and electricity available in the village. Such a LIVING LEGEND..

The inspiration is that:

If pak Made Sujendra who was unfortunate by only completed his 4th grade CAN contribute in making the education available for a village like Songan and Blandingan. What we (who are fortunate to have access to higher education) have done?...
Each of us is RESPONSIBLE, and it's OUR TIME, NOW!.
